Greatest Love Is All / Whitney Houston


私の好きなアーチストと言ったら Whitney Houstonを外すことはできない。その中でもこの“Greatest Love Is All”はいちばんの曲。
George Bensonも歌っているが、段違いにWhitneyの方がいい。

この曲は77年に Michael MasserとLinda Creedによって作られた。 モハメド･アリの伝記映画の挿入歌としてGeorge Bensonによってレコーディングされたが、Linda Creedはこのとき(76年)末期癌に侵されていた。
LindaはWhitneyがこの曲でナンバー１に達する前に他界した(往年37歳)。 歌詞には彼女の母に対する想いが込められているとか。
翌年、Lindaの家族と友人が“Linda Creed Breast Cancer財団”を設立。 彼女自身も92年にSongwriters栄誉の殿堂を授与される。
Linda Creedはこの他にThe Stylisticsのヒット曲You Are Everythingも書いている。

You Tubeをご覧になればわかると思うが、このPVはWhitneyの少女期を回想した作りになっている。
歌手のオーディションに出場し、母が見守る中で彼女は立派に成功する。
そのときの自分があったからこそ今の自分が存在する。それと母の偉大なる愛…
実際に彼女がシンガーを目指した理由の一つにゴスペル歌手であった母と、従姉妹Dionne Warwickの存在があったという。
